🧠What Is a Stroke?
“Stroke” – a term that most of us have come to understand as an injury to the brain that can cause slurred speech, weakness, and a droopy face. Maybe you, or someone you know, has had a stroke and this presentation is spot on. Or maybe the symptoms were entirely different. Why is this?
🧬 What Happens in the Brain During a Stroke
trokes are classified as either ischemic or hemorrhagic:
- Ischemic strokes are the most common. They occur when a vessel in the brain becomes blocked by a clot, preventing blood and oxygen from reaching brain tissue.
- Hemorrhagic strokes are less common. They happen when a weakened blood vessel bursts, causing blood to leak into the brain.
In both cases, the brain is deprived of oxygen, leading to the death of brain cells (neurons).
⏱️ Why Time and Location Matter
How long the brain goes without oxygen dramatically influences the severity of symptoms. That’s why we’re told to act FAST when we suspect someone is having a stroke.
The location of the stroke also plays a major role. Different parts of the brain control different functions, and each region receives blood from specific vessels.
📍 Common Stroke Location: Right Middle Cerebral Artery
The most common place for a stroke is in the right middle cerebral artery. A stroke here may cause:
- Left-sided weakness or paralysis
- Decreased sensation on the left side of the body
- More impulsive behavior
- Deficits in coordination and balance

🧑‍⚕️ Why Recovery Looks Different for Everyone
During recovery, it’s easy to compare your progress to others.
I’ve had patients with the exact same diagnosis—Stroke—but vastly different outcomes:
- One returns to work in three weeks with no weakness or balance issues.
- Another spends three weeks in the hospital, two months in a rehab facility, and completes countless hours of outpatient therapy.
What’s the difference? Time and place.
How long the brain was deprived of oxygen and where the stroke occurred.
